Stainless steel is a kind of steel or metal stuff that is resistant toward the influence of oxidation. This is not created naturally in the earth. Stainless steel is a combination of some metal elements in certain compositions. The combination produces new kind of metal with new characteristics that are commonly more superior that the forming element. Besides, the characteristics are basically those expected by manufacturers. There are many kinds of stainless steel for sure. Here, two of them are explained, Austenitic and duplex, commonly used to form certain products.
Austenitic stainless steel
Austenitic stainless steel is made from the combination of iron, chrome, nickel, and the blend of iron, chrome, nickel, and manganese with percentage of 18% chrome and 8% nickel. Besides, there are also some other elements added like Molybdenum, Titanium, and Copper so that the characteristics of stainless steel are able to modify. The modification is basically functioned to improve the resistance towards corrosion.
Almost all kinds of stainless steel are fragile in low temperature. However, due to the content of nickel, austenitic stainless steel tends to be more suitable to be applied in the low temperature or known as cryogenic. Besides, it is also nonmagnetic and not able to be hardened or softened by heating. In general, austenitic stainless steel is the most easy to be shaped of all. Here are some products made from austenitic stainless steel; bathroom and kitchen sink, building structure (including ceiling, gutters, door, and window), kitchen appliances, chemical tank, valve, and many more.
Duplex Stainless Steel
Different from austenitic stainless steel that has high content of nickel; Duplex needs this forming metal less. Meanwhile, the chrome is the biggest part in it. This makes the microstructure of Duplex stainless steel has the combination characteristics from austenitic and another type named ferrite. This type of stainless steel is also resistant toward corrosion pressure although it is not as good as Austenitic and Ferrite. However, it is more superior to those two in term of strength and durability. The way to shape it into products is probably not as easy as Austenitic but it is quiet easy to be welded. In our daily life, it is quite easy to see the use of duplex stainless steel. Some of them are in the heat exchanger, marine navigation tool, food preservative industry, oil and gas off-shore installation, chemical and petro-chemical industry, valve, and so on.
Despite the Austenitic and Duplex stainless steel, there are surely some more types of stainless steel with different compositions and functions. However, it looks like these two are the more often ones to be found in our daily life for the high level of safety and also the resistance. It can be concluded that the difference of Austenitic and Duplex are mostly related to the forming elements and functions or applications. If Austenitic stainless steel contains higher level of nickel, Duplex is even lower. Both can be found in any utensils but Duplex stainless steel tends to be used in the industry not home appliances.
